Year 2
Year 2 is an explorative year where we encourage our children to become enthusiastic, independent and conscientious learners.
The day begins at 8:45am when the children enter the classroom and have a challenge waiting for them to solve. We usually complete Maths and English tasks in the morning and after break, we focus on developing our reading and spelling knowledge. The afternoons usually consist of subjects like PSHE, Music and Art. Our PE is a whole afternoon a week and the children come to school in their school PE kit!
Our curriculum is engaging and fun for everyone. Our history and geography topics include The Great Fire of London, Our Local Area and Fighting Fit.
We give the children a wide range of experiences to teach them the essential life skills as well as growing an enjoyment for learning. These include a trip to the seaside, a Medieval Fayre, History workshops and a visit to the zoo! These experiences all link with the subjects we are learning.
Throughout the year we, as teachers, are constantly assessing the children and their ability across the curriculum. This helps us to plan exciting lessons so that we know what they need to learn next and to check their understanding. As the children are still quite young, we do not want to worry them with the word ‘test’. The Governments end of Key Stage 1 tests are to help to inform our teacher assessment and therefore we keep them low key for the children and they may come home and say “today we did a challenge”.
Our homework grid is handed out half termly and the children are able to choose the homework they would like to do from the choices they are given. These include links to all our subjects that we are studying that half term. It is expected that children complete one piece of homework a week as well as reading daily.
We love learning and teaching children the skills that they can take with them in life. Every day in Year 2 at Chandlers Field, we aim to empower the children to build on their knowledge and experiences. If you would like to find out more about what we are doing, you are warmly invited to pay us a visit.
